SUMMARY:Beekeeping 101 Workshop 2-Class Series @ Yakima Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Being a successful beekeeper means arming yourself with the knowledge and skills needed to face today's beekeeping challenges. The Arboretum's Beekeeping 101 workshop will help you do just that. Held on two consecutive Saturdays in the Arboretum's Jewett Interpretive Center\, this workshop will include 12 hours of instruction and includes some hands-on experience with beekeeping equipment.\n\n \n\nTaught by experienced members of the Central Washington Beekeepers Association and special invited instructors\, the class is designed for those who are seriously considering beekeeping and/or who wish to brush up on their basic beekeeping skills. No previous experience or training is required. Major topics include bee culture\, beekeeping equipment\, hive management for each season\, bee pests and diseases\, and honey production\, among other topics. You'll also learn about the expected costs and the time needed to be a successful beekeeper. This course will not make you an expert\, but will give you an understanding of what beekeeping entails\, including some hands-on experience with the equipment. If you took the "To Bee or Not To Bee" and Equipment classes last year\, this course will build on that information and prepare you to start keeping a hive this year.\n\n \n\nThe class will begin at 9am and ends at 4pm. Lunch is an hour long from noon to 1pm. Feel free to bring your own lunch or plan to eat offsite. Coffee service is provided throughout the day.\n\n \n\nCome prepared to take notes and bring a folder/binder to put handouts in. Dress for the weather and wear walking shoes since the class will be visiting the Arboretum's apiary (bee hives) on the afternoon half of the session on the 24th (weather permitting).\n\n \n\nLearn more about the Central Washington Beekeeper Association by visiting their website at http://www.yakimabees.com/.
