Heritage University All Nations Student Powwow
Event Description:

Heritage University’s two Native American student clubs are bringing the successful All Nations Student Powwow back to campus for a second year. This year’s powwow will take place Saturday, August 26, 2017.

“Heritage University is located on the ancestral lands of the Yakama Nation,” said Brenda Lewis, president of the student club American Indian Business Leaders (AIBL) of Heritage University. “The powwow is a great way to celebrate and share the rich culture of the Yakama people with our community. We knew after the success of our first event, where more than 500 joined us, that we would make this an annual activity.”

The event opens at 10:00 a.m. with the Grand Entry taking place at 1:00 p.m. It will feature a drumming competition as well as men’s and women’s traditional, fancy, grass and jingle dance competitions for dancers of all ages—from tiny tots to adults over 55.  Several honor dances and intertribal dances, where people from all different cultures are invited to participate, are also planned. The campus will be filled throughout the day with vendors selling food, crafts and other merchandise. Rounding out the day will be a hosted evening meal at 6:00 p.m.

The Toppenish drum group Wild Rose Singers will serve as Head Drum for the Powwow. Heritage University board member and long-time supporter Arlen Washines, deputy director for Yakama Nation Human Services, will serve as master of ceremonies. Recent Heritage graduate Jacob Billy will serve as arena director. Casey Cree will be the whip man. The event is co-sponsored by the Heritage University Native American Club (

The Powwow is a free event and open to the public. Dancer and drummer registration will open at 10:00 a.m. and will remain open until 2:00 p.m. The first five drums to sign up for the event will be awarded a stipend. Vendor applications are still being accepted.  For more information, visit, or call (509) 865-8588.
