Yet such technical descriptions are inadequate for describing what it feels like to teach or learn from such a curriculum. In this talk\, I will describe the Eureka Math Curriculum metaphorically as an epic story: students stepping through A Story of Units (PK-5)\, A Story of Ratios (6-8)\, and A Story of Functions (9-12) feel like they are moving through an extended\, well-written\, nonfiction\, illustrated story.\n\nNote: The presentation itself is purposely designed to be only a few minutes to allow for an extended question-answer period afterwards.\nBio:\nScott Baldridge is the author and lead mathematician of the Eureka Math/EngageNY Curriculum. He earned his PhD. in mathematics from Michigan State University and previously held a faculty position at Indiana University before accepting a professorship in mathematics at Louisiana State University in 2004.\n\nBaldridge has been involved in math education since the mid-1990s starting with his work on the Connected Mathematics Project. This project made him acutely aware of the need for better teacher preparation programs. Responding to that need\, he co-wrote two textbooks: Elementary Mathematics for Teachers (2004) and Elementary Geometry for Teachers (2008). Both textbooks are highest rated among all popular college math textbooks for teachers in their respective categories.\n\nIn 2008\, as part of his NSF CAREER award\, he implemented an Asian-style curriculum in a high-needs school district in Baker\, Louisiana. The program led to a 90% increase in students passing the high stakes state assessment. Partially based upon the success of that program\, Baldridge was asked to lead the writing of New York's PK-12 mathematics curriculum in 2012. The lessons learned at Baker heavily informed the writing of the EngageNY/Eureka Math curriculum\, which is currently being used in thousands of classrooms across the United States.Click here to view the event flyer For those who can not attend\, lecture videos can be viewed on the CSME website.
